Shelly shared on her social media about why she does CrossFit.
She said she gets questions all the time with attached statements like:
“I go to a gym that costs less and get the same things.”
“People who do CrossFit always get injured.”
“It’s a cult and you drank the Kool-Aid because CrossFit is crazy.”
Shelly says to that, “CrossFit is way more than just a gym. WAY more. I don’t do crazy things beyond my abilities. And the Kool-Aid is great! It happens to be served next door at Primal Nutrition and they call it tea. I also might be a little crazy.”
Shelly says she is in love with CrossFit. “It is way more than a gym. It’s way more than I ever imagined I could do. It’s also a community and support system that I never thought I would have. It’s someone texting me saying they missed me in class. It’s getting support in scaling workouts when you aren’t yet at the level do something and are given choices that are doable and still a great workout. It is people cheering you on no matter what level you are and celebrating even the tiniest of victories with you. It is also 3 month check-ins to see progress and set new goals.”
“Yes, I post a lot about it.” She states with confidence and pride. “Just as someone who discovers ‘the best’ restaurant, make-up, sale… and they post about how awesome it is and can’t stop talking about it. They want the world to know how great it is. That is me and CrossFit.”
Shelly is not an early morning person, but she gets up at 4:30am to go to the 5am class. But after the workout, her day is fueled from her accomplishment of doing a workout and getting her tea from next door. “There was a time when I didn’t want to get out of bed, let alone workout!”
She went from zero exercise experience, like most of our members do, and then started with and stuck to CrossFit. She said she was scared to start and it was challenging. Things like being off the ground on the stationary bike was terrifying to her. She never thought she would jump to a box because of the fear of being off the ground. She embraced the journey and tears have been shed on it. “I am breaking through the fears in my mind of what I thought I couldn’t do all while the coaches were talking me through it, cheering me on, and pushing me for good technique and deeper squats.” She laughs.
CrossFit has helped her get rid of sleep apnea. CrossFit has helped her through mental struggles, fears, and limitations she had put on herself. CrossFit has helped her gain new relationships with other people. CrossFit has created a relationship between herself and her health.
She says you can scroll on by her posts if you are tired of it, but she encourages others to share in their successes and post theirs too!
The athletes at Jurassic, just like Shelly, will cheer you on in what you are accomplishing and encourage you to keep going. Shelly celebrated her 3 year anniversary in April! She says, “Who would have thought I would keep it up. I sure didn’t.” She says she hopes she will always have Jurassic CrossFit because it is that important to her. “So no,” she talks to those on her social media page, “CrossFit is not just a gym.”
Shelly gave it a shot and never turned back. It is your turn to be a little unsure and just do it anyways.
